Excursions
Less than an hour and a half from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley swaps the heat and noise of the city for green terraces, a rushing mountain river and Berber villages at the foot of the High Atlas. It is one of the easiest and most popular day trips from Marrakech.
This Ourika Valley guide covers how to get there, what to see, how to visit the Setti Fatma waterfalls, the best time to go and practical tips to make the most of your day.
The Ourika Valley lies south of Marrakech, in the foothills of the High Atlas. The valley begins about 35 km from the city, near the market town of Tnine Ourika, and follows the Ourika River upstream to Setti Fatma, the last village on the paved road, about 65 km from Marrakech.
Along the way, the road passes earth-coloured Berber villages, walnut and fruit trees, terraced fields and riverside cafΓ©s, with the mountains getting higher as you go.
| Option | Travel time | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private day trip | ~1h15β1h30 to Setti Fatma | Stops on the way, lunch included |
| Private transfer | ~45 min to the valley | One way or return, to any address |
| Shared grand taxi | ~1h30 + waiting | Cheap, leaves when full |
| Group tour | Full day | Fixed schedule, many people |
The highlight of the valley is the series of seven waterfalls above Setti Fatma. Most visitors walk to the first cascade, which drops about 25β30 metres into a rocky pool. The path is short but steep, with large rocks and simple bridges over the river. Allow around 30 minutes each way, more on busy days. The higher waterfalls need a longer, harder hike.
Local guides wait at the start of the trail. They are not essential for the first waterfall, but they know the safest route and can help on the rocky sections.
Stop in one of the villages on the way up to see traditional houses built from earth and stone, small mosques and terraced fields watered by ancient irrigation channels. Some families welcome visitors for mint tea.
Women-run cooperatives along the road show how argan oil is extracted by hand. You can taste argan oil, amlou (an almond, honey and argan spread) and buy cosmetics directly from the producers.
In Setti Fatma and along the road, restaurants set their tables right on the riverbank β sometimes with chairs in the water. A tagine with Moroccan salads and mint tea, with the sound of the river and the mountains all around, is one of the best parts of the day.
If you visit on a Monday, stop at the weekly souk in Tnine Ourika ("tnine" means Monday in Arabic). It is a real local market for fruit, vegetables, spices, livestock and household goods β very different from the souks of Marrakech.
Private day trip from your riad, with stops, Setti Fatma and lunch by the river. Price on request.
Visit on a weekday if you can β Saturdays and Sundays are much busier.
Both are classic Atlas trips from Marrakech. Ourika is closer and easier, with waterfalls and riverside lunches β perfect for families and short stays. Imlil is higher and wilder, at the foot of Mount Toubkal, and better for walkers. See our Imlil guide and Imlil day trip, or compare all options in the best day trips from Marrakech.
The valley starts about 35 km south of Marrakech. Setti Fatma, at the end of the road, is about 65 km away β around 1h15 to 1h30 by car.
Yes. It is the easiest way to see the High Atlas, Berber villages and waterfalls in a day from Marrakech, with a relaxed lunch by the river.
Around 30 minutes each way to the first waterfall, on a steep and rocky path. Reaching the higher waterfalls takes several hours.
Not for the valley itself. For the waterfall path, a local guide is optional but helpful on the rocky sections.
Yes. The villages, cooperatives and riverside lunch are easy for all ages. The waterfall walk is steep, so it is best for older children with good shoes.
A weekday is quieter than the weekend. Monday adds the local souk in Tnine Ourika.
