Imlil village below the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas

Just 90 minutes from Marrakech, Imlil is a mountain village at around 1,740 metres, surrounded by walnut trees, terraced fields and the highest peaks of the High Atlas. It is the starting point for treks to Mount Toubkal β€” and one of the most rewarding day trips from Marrakech.

This guide explains how to plan an Imlil day trip from Marrakech: how to get there, the best walks, whether you can climb Mount Toubkal in a day, when to go and what to bring.

Where Is Imlil?

Imlil lies about 60–65 km south of Marrakech, at the end of a mountain road that climbs through the Moulay Brahim gorge and the market town of Asni. The drive takes around 1h15 to 1h30.

The village sits at the foot of Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest mountain in North Africa, inside Toubkal National Park. On clear days, the snow-capped summits are visible from the village.

Best Walks from Imlil

1. Imlil to Aremd (Aroumd)

The classic short walk. Aremd, at around 1,900 metres, is one of the largest villages in the valley, built in terraces on a rocky spur facing Toubkal. The walk takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour each way on a wide mule track, with great views back over the valley. Suitable for most people with comfortable shoes.

2. Imlil to Sidi Chamharouch

For keen walkers: continue beyond Aremd up the Mizane valley to Sidi Chamharouch, a small pilgrimage site at around 2,350 metres, marked by a large white-painted boulder. Allow about 2 to 2.5 hours each way from Imlil. The shrine itself is reserved for Muslims, but the cafΓ©s around it are a popular rest stop on the way to Toubkal.

3. Valley Loop through Berber Villages

A gentler option is a loop through the villages around Imlil, past walnut groves, irrigation channels and terraced fields. It is a good choice for families, in hot weather or if you prefer a relaxed pace β€” your guide can adapt the route on the day.

Can You Climb Mount Toubkal in a Day from Marrakech?

Not realistically. The normal route climbs over 2,400 metres from Imlil to the summit. Most trekkers walk from Imlil to the Toubkal refuge (around 3,200 m) on the first day, reach the summit early on the second morning and walk back down the same day β€” so plan at least 2 days.

Trekking in the Toubkal area is done with a licensed mountain guide, who can also arrange mules, the refuge and equipment. In winter, snow and ice mean crampons, an ice axe and real mountain experience are required.

If you only have one day, the walks to Aremd or Sidi Chamharouch give you a taste of the high mountains without the summit.
