About This Excursion

Imlil & the High Atlas

Imlil is the gateway village to Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak at 4,167 m. Set at around 1,740 metres in a dramatic valley of walnut groves and terraced fields, it is the best place to experience the High Atlas in a single day from Marrakech.

With a local guide, you walk from Imlil to Aremd, a Berber village built in terraces on a rocky spur facing the Toubkal massif. Along the way you pass stone houses, irrigation channels and mule tracks used every day by the villagers, before sitting down for a home-style lunch with a local family.

It is a step higher and wilder than the Ourika Valley, with real mountain scenery and an authentic trekking-village atmosphere — while staying easy enough for most walkers.

Good to know
Wear walking shoes and bring a warm layer — it is much cooler in the mountains than in Marrakech. Keen walkers can ask for a longer hike to Sidi Chamharouch (about 2 hours each way), with an earlier departure. Climbing Toubkal is not possible in one day: it is a 2-day trek with a licensed mountain guide.

About 65 km south of Marrakech, around 1h15 to 1h30 by private vehicle via Asni.
Around 2 hours in total: about 45 minutes to 1 hour each way between Imlil and Aremd on a wide mule track, at an easy pace with stops.
No. Climbing Toubkal normally takes 2 days from Imlil with a licensed mountain guide. This day trip gives you views of the Toubkal massif and a walk to Aremd.
Yes, for children used to walking. A mule can be arranged for part of the way if little legs get tired.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are ideal for walking. In winter there is often snow on the peaks and it gets cold, but the village walk is usually still possible.
