Essaouira is one of the most popular trips from Marrakech β a relaxed, wind-swept town on the Atlantic with blue fishing boats, sea ramparts and a car-free medina. The two cities are about 190 km apart, and there are four main ways to make the journey.
This guide compares the bus, the shared grand taxi, a rental car and a private transfer from Marrakech to Essaouira, with travel times, approximate prices and practical tips so you can choose the option that fits your trip.

The Marrakech to Essaouira bus is run mainly by Supratours and CTM, Morocco's two main coach companies. Coaches are comfortable and air-conditioned, and there are several departures a day, with more in the high season.
In Essaouira, buses arrive a short walk or a quick petit taxi ride from the medina.
Best for: solo travellers and backpackers on a budget with flexible plans.
Shared grand taxis to Essaouira leave from the taxi rank near Bab Doukkala in Marrakech. You pay per seat, and the car leaves only when it is full β usually six passengers in an older vehicle.
It can be quicker than the bus once you are on the road, but waiting for the car to fill can take a while, especially in the afternoon. You can pay for the empty seats to leave sooner, or hire the whole taxi, but agree the price clearly before you set off.
Best for: travellers who already know Morocco and don't mind a cramped ride.
Driving yourself is easy on this route: the road is good and the drive takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. A car gives you freedom to stop where you like, which makes sense if you are continuing along the coast towards Agadir.
Keep in mind that the Essaouira medina is closed to cars, so you will need to use a paid car park outside the walls. Speed limits are strictly enforced, with regular police checks along the way.
Best for: confident drivers on a multi-stop road trip.
A private transfer from Marrakech to Essaouira picks you up at your riad or hotel at the time you choose and drives you straight to Essaouira β no stations, no waiting for other passengers and no luggage fees.
Because the medina is car-free, drivers drop you at the gate closest to your riad. Local porters with hand carts wait at the main gates and can take your luggage to the door for a small tip.
Best for: couples, families, groups, travellers with luggage and anyone short on time.
