| Airport | Marrakech Menara (RAK) |
| Distance to the medina | About 6 km Β· 15β20 minutes |
| Passport control | Usually 15 minutes to 1 hour |
| Cheapest way to town | Airport bus 19 Β· ~30 MAD per person |
| Private transfer to the medina | From β¬18 per car |
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is unusually close to the city center β about 6 km from the medina, which usually translates to a 15-20 minute drive depending on traffic. This is good news: even if your transfer arrangements go slightly wrong, you're never stuck far from civilization.
Most riads and hotels in the medina, Hivernage, or Gueliz are within this same short radius, so transfer times rarely vary by more than 10 minutes regardless of your exact destination within the city.
Expect anything from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on how many flights land at the same time. Afternoons and weekends in high season are the busiest. Have your passport and the name and address of your hotel or riad ready, as the officer may ask where you are staying.
After collecting your bags, all luggage goes through an X-ray scanner before you leave the hall. It is quick. Note that drones are not allowed into Morocco without prior authorisation and are held at customs.
There are ATMs and exchange counters at the airport. Exchange rates at the airport are usually less good than in town, so change or withdraw only what you need for the first day. When an ATM offers to convert the amount into your home currency, choose dirhams instead β it is almost always cheaper. Many ATMs give 200 MAD notes, so break one early in a shop or cafΓ©.
Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi have counters in the arrivals area. You need your passport, and a tourist pack with data costs from about 100β200 MAD at the airport; the same data is often cheaper in town. An eSIM bought before you fly is another easy option. Having data from the start makes it easy to message your driver or your riad.
If you booked a private transfer, your driver waits in the arrivals hall, just after the exit doors, with a sign showing your name. With Kasbah Transfer, the driver tracks your flight, so a delay or an early landing is not a problem, and waiting time is included.
The cheapest option. Bus 19 costs about 30 MAD per person and runs roughly every 30 minutes from early morning until about 21:30, stopping in Gueliz and near Jemaa el-Fna. It does not go into the medina, so you still walk to your riad with your bags β fine for light travellers arriving by day.
Marrakech airport has official taxis with a fixed-rate system, with prices typically posted at the taxi rank. In theory, this should give you a reliable, regulated fare. In practice, many drivers either claim the meter is broken, quote a "special tourist price," or simply ignore the posted rates altogether β especially late at night when there's less competition and oversight.
Apps such as inDrive or Heetch can work in Marrakech, but they operate in a legal grey area and airport pickups are not always easy. Do not count on them if you land late or have a lot of luggage.
A private transfer booked in advance means a driver is waiting at arrivals with your name, the price is agreed before you land, and there's zero negotiation involved. This is generally the most stress-free option, particularly for late-night arrivals, families with luggage, or first-time visitors unfamiliar with local taxi customs.
Here's a realistic breakdown of what different transfer options typically cost for the airport-to-medina route:
| Option | Typical Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Airport bus 19 | ~30 MAD per person | Until about 21:30, stops outside the medina |
| Official taxi (fair rate) | ~100β150 MAD | Check the posted rate before getting in; higher at night |
| Official taxi (tourist rate) | 300-500 MAD | What many visitors end up paying without negotiating |
| Pre-booked private transfer | From β¬18 per car | Fixed in advance, same price day and night, driver waits with your name |
Prices fluctuate with fuel costs and season, but as a rule of thumb: if a driver quotes more than 300 MAD for the airport-to-medina run without a private arrangement and clear extras, it's worth politely declining and trying another driver.
Fixed prices per vehicle for a sedan (1 to 3 passengers). Larger vehicles are available for every route.
| Destination | Time | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Medina, Gueliz, Hivernage | 15β20 min | β¬18 |
| Palmeraie | 25 min | β¬25 |
| Agafay Desert | 35 min | β¬55 |
| Imlil | 1h30 | β¬50 |
| Essaouira | 2h30 | β¬60 |
| Agadir | 2h45 | β¬120 |
| Taghazout | 3h | β¬120 |
Book a private airport transfer in advance β fixed price, driver waiting with your name, zero stress.
Cars cannot drive through most of the medina's narrow lanes. Your driver stops at the closest point and walks you to the door, or calls your riad so someone meets you. Porters with hand carts are also available for a small tip. Read our first-timer's guide to the Marrakech medina before you arrive. Travelling with children? Before your gate you pass check-in, a customs check, security screening and passport control, and queues can be long in high season. Plan to arrive at the airport about 3 hours before an international flight. From the medina, the drive takes 15β20 minutes; a transfer from your riad to the airport costs from β¬18 per car. The airport-to-medina run is short, cheap, and shouldn't be stressful β but it's also the first interaction most visitors have with Morocco, and a bad experience here can color the whole trip. Whether you negotiate a fair taxi rate yourself or book a private transfer in advance, knowing the real numbers ahead of time is the best protection against overpaying. And when you get to your driver, here is how much to tip in Morocco.
