Transfers
Flying home from Marrakech? The airport is only 15–20 minutes from the medina, but the checks before your gate can take much longer than you expect. This guide covers when to leave, what happens inside the terminal, what to do with your leftover dirhams and how to book your ride to the airport.
Plan to arrive about 3 hours before an international flight, and 2 hours before a domestic one. Some days you are through in 30 minutes; on busy mornings and in high season (spring, summer and the Christmas holidays) the queues for check-in and passport control can take well over an hour.
| Where you stay | Drive to the airport | Leave your hotel |
|---|---|---|
| Medina, Gueliz, Hivernage | 15–20 min | 3h20 before departure |
| Palmeraie | 25 min | 3h30 before departure |
| Agafay Desert | 35–40 min | 3h45 before departure |
| Essaouira | about 2h30 | 6 hours before departure |
If your riad is deep inside the medina, add 10–15 minutes to walk with your bags to the nearest point a car can reach.
The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency: you are not supposed to take large amounts out of the country, and it is hard to exchange abroad. A few hundred dirhams are usually not a problem, but it is best to spend or change the rest before you fly.
There is no left-luggage office at Marrakech Airport. If your flight is late in the day, most hotels and riads will keep your bags after check-out, and we can pick you up there.
On departure day you want a ride that is on time, whatever happens. Your options:
